Why Did God Choose Mary and Joseph?

Mary: A Woman of Humility and Faith

Mary was a young woman from Nazareth, a small and insignificant town in Galilee. She lived a humble life, likely unnoticed by society. Yet, her heart and character set her apart for God’s extraordinary plan.

Her Faith and Obedience

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, announcing that she would bear the Son of God, her response was one of complete trust and surrender. Despite the shocking and overwhelming news, Mary said:

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38, ESV)

This shows Mary’s unwavering faith in God’s promises and her willingness to embrace His will, even when it seemed impossible. She believed God could do what He said, and her obedience made her a vessel for His miraculous work.

Her Humility

Mary never sought greatness or recognition. She describes herself as a servant of the Lord, magnifying God’s glory rather than her own. In the Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55), she praises God for choosing someone so lowly, saying:

“For He has looked on the humble estate of His servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.”

God saw Mary’s humble and faithful heart – qualities that reflect the very nature of Christ Himself.

Her Strength and Courage

Mary faced incredible challenges after accepting God’s plan. She risked shame and ridicule for being pregnant before marriage, a situation that could have destroyed her reputation or even her life under the cultural norms of her time. Yet, she persevered in faith, trusting that God would see her through.

Joseph: A Man of Integrity and Compassion

While Mary often takes center stage in the Nativity story, Joseph’s role is equally significant. God chose Joseph not as an afterthought, but because of his exemplary character and faith.

A Righteous Man

Joseph is described in Matthew 1:19 as “a just man.” This means he lived according to God’s laws and upheld high moral standards. When Joseph discovered that Mary was pregnant, his initial instinct was to handle the situation quietly and with kindness. He sought to protect her from public disgrace, showing his compassion and integrity even in confusion.

Obedience to God’s Voice

When the angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, explaining that Mary’s child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Joseph did not hesitate to obey. The angel instructed him:

“Do not fear to take Mary as your wife… She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” (Matthew 1:20–21)

Joseph believed and obeyed, choosing to follow God’s command rather than public opinion or personal doubts. His trust in God was unwavering.

A Protector and Provider

Joseph served as the earthly father and protector of Jesus. He ensured Mary and Jesus’ safety by leading them to Egypt to escape Herod’s decree (Matthew 2:13–15). His willingness to care for and provide for the child Jesus, despite the extraordinary circumstances, reveals his strength, humility, and love.

Why Did God Choose Them?

The choices of Mary and Joseph reflect God’s divine wisdom. He did not choose royalty, wealth, or societal power to bring forth the Savior of the world. Instead, He chose a humble, faithful young woman and a righteous, compassionate man.

They Were Faithful: Both Mary and Joseph trusted God’s word and acted on it, even when it was difficult or costly.

They Were Humble: Their lives reflected a quiet strength and humility, qualities that aligned with God’s plan to bring salvation to all through humility and sacrifice.

They Were Willing: God looks for willing hearts – people ready to say “yes” to His call, no matter the cost. Mary and Joseph answered that call with obedience and trust.

In choosing Mary and Joseph, God demonstrated that He values the heart above all else. He works through the humble, the obedient, and the faithful to accomplish His great purposes. Their story reminds us that God’s plans often unfold in unexpected ways, and He can use ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.

What Can We Learn from Mary and Joseph?

God Sees Our Hearts: Like Mary and Joseph, we don’t have to be extraordinary by the world’s standards for God to use us. He looks for faith, humility, and obedience.

Trust God’s Plan: God’s calling often comes with challenges, but when we trust Him, He provides everything we need to fulfill His purpose.

Faith Requires Action: Both Mary and Joseph demonstrated faith through their actions. They stepped forward in obedience, even when they didn’t have all the answers.

Mary and Joseph were chosen because they reflected God’s values and trusted in His plan. Their story is a beautiful reminder that God uses ordinary people with willing hearts to accomplish His extraordinary purposes.
